Raymond, Father Gilbert

1889, April 5

Date of Birth:  1809, November 14

Gilbert Raymond was born at Aigueperse in the Diocese of Clermont on November 14, 1809. He entered the major seminary of Clermont on October 30, 1830. He left for Baltimore on October 10, 1837, slated for St. Charles College, which was not to open for another eleven years. He became President of St. Mary’s College in 1841. One year after St. Charles College opened in 1848, Father Jenkins, its first president, switched positions with Father Raymond, who thus became the second president of the minor seminary. In 1850 Father Raymond was recalled to France. He returned to Baltimore in 1854, but he went to the Archdiocese of New Orleans. He left the Society to become the superior of the New Orleans Theological Seminary and vicar general to Archbishop Perché. He died at Opelousas on April 5, 1889.
