Mahoney, Father John R.

John R. Mahoney was born in Bath, Steuben County, New York, in the Diocese of Rochester, on September 14, 1862. He was ordained to the priesthood at the University of Innsbruck in Austria on January 23, 1887. After further study in Europe, he returned to the United States and did parochial and missionary work in the Diocese of Alton, now Springfield, in Illinois. Having become a Sulpician, he taught Philosophy at St. John’s Seminary, Boston, between 1890 and 1893. From 1893 to 1898 he was at St. Mary’s Seminary in Baltimore. In 1898 he went to St. Joseph’s Seminary in Dunwoodie in the Archdiocese of New York, where he taught Moral Theology and Canon Law.

Father Mahoney was among the Sulpicians who left the Society in 1906 when the supervision of the Dunwoodie seminary passed from the Sulpicians to the Archdiocese of New York. He continued to teach at Dunwoodie until October 2, 1916, when he was appointed pastor of St. Rose of Lima Church in New York City. In 1941 he was raised to the rank of Domestic Prelate. Monsignor Mahoney died on February 3, 1951.
