Gervais, Father J. Marie

Born on August 24, 1829, in the Diocese of Clermont in France, Father Gervais seems to have entered the Sulpician Seminary of Clermont on October 15, 1850. Later, having become a Sulpician priest, he was assigned to Baltimore; he arrived there in 1855. He taught Philosophy in the Baltimore Seminary briefly.

With the blessing of his Sulpician superior, Father Lhomme, he left the Society of St. Sulpice in July of 1857 and became a priest of the Diocese of Newark. First assigned to Madison, New Jersey, he likely taught at Seton Hall College, then located in Madison. Later he served at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Newark. Father Gervais died as pastor of St. James Church in Newark on July 24, 1872.
