McCorkle, Father John

John McCorkle was born in Wilmington, Delaware, on September 9, 1909. His early education was at St. Thomas’ and St. Paul’s Schools in Wilmington. In 1924 he came to St. Charles College in Catonsville, Maryland, from which he graduated in 1930. He studied Philosophy at St. Mary’s Seminary in Baltimore and finished his Theology at the new seminary in Roland Park. He received his S.T.B. there in 1934, and his M.A. in 1935. In that same year he received a Certificate in Library Science from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. He was ordained to the priesthood for the Diocese of Wilmington on June 11, 1936.

In 1936-1937 Father McCorkle made his Solitude in Catonsville. In 1937 he went to St. Edward’s Seminary in Seattle, Washington, where he became Librarian. He also taught in both the minor and major seminaries at St. Edward’s. While stationed there, he pursued courses at the University of Washington and achieved a B.A. in Library Science in 1941. Father McCorkle continued as Librarian when he moved to St. Thomas Seminary in 1960. While on a visit home to Wilmington, he died of a heart attack on January 27, 1977.
