Sulpician Necrology, 1811 to Present

Dear Reader,

Welcome to the recently updated edition of the American Necrology of the Society of St. Sulpice now being called 2019 Necrology of the Society of St. Sulpice, Province of the United States. This two-volume work and its electronic on-line counterpart have been over twenty years in the making, spanning three U.S. Provincials and countless hours of work.

It was first edited and published in 1983 under the care of Fr. Vincent M. Eaton, P.S.S., the Sulpician Archivist, retired. In the first edition of the compilation of obituary notices, his introductory sentence read:

“The purpose of this collection of obituaries is to make available in English the basic data about deceased Sulpicians who labored even briefly in the Society’s work in the United States. Some of the accounts are translations of the circular letters sent by the Superior-General on the occasion of a confrere’s death... After Father Noonan’s death (1981), the Secretary of the American Sulpician Province, Father William Lee, initiated the practice of issuing an obituary notice fuller than previous ones:  Father Lee’s notices summarize the lives of American confreres.”

This labor of love, spanning many years and having been carried and cared for by many individuals reaches its completion in the fall of 2019. This most recent edition of the Sulpician Necrology would not have been possible without the careful oversite of Carleen Kramer, the countless hours of typing and re-typing of Janine Vary, the technical skills of Marguerite Plank and the vigilant editorial skills of Fr. Richard M. Gula, P.S.S.

It is our hope that this new edition of the U.S. Sulpician Necrology will communicate the ethos of our history and be a source of inspiration to the readers. We stand on the shoulders of those who have gone before us and we must labor to forge a sturdy foundation for future generations to stand upon.

The 2019 Necrology of the Society of St. Sulpice, Province of the United States is divided into two books. Volume 1 covers 1811 through 1950; Volume 2 covers 1951 through 2019.
